forget about gigs of the year cos one of my gigs of the century was discharge live at gallery manchester 13 march 1983…….

anyone who saw them on this awesome testosterone charged tour will know what power they possessed an just why punk is so entwined in all our aged hearts and souls. it was one of the most intense experiences of my life no audience no band just one great mass of punk power a life changing night indeed

that was the one and only time i saw them and when they went metal the world turned black and cal started to sing like micky mouse and you know the rest it was sad so sad (as mike drone used ta say). however on hearing the boys were back together in an unthought of original lineup incarnation i did think it was going to be another metal nightmare but how wrong I was cos when i heard the comeback lp of 2002 simply titled discharge the hairs on my shaven head started to quiver with excitement and long repressed punkoid memories

it was like 1983 all over again – raw aggressive vocals and powerful guitar chords of anger discharge were back and cumin at yer rite in yer fukin face – the gods of punk core thrash were here and wanted my soul again. cal didn't wanna tour which was real heartbreakin news however anthony/rat from leamington spas legendary varukers an a massive fan of the band had agreed ta cum in vocals along with rainy bones an tezz it was lukin hot…. 23 years on wud it still work…..would it still mean anything………

….and of course it did – if you have not seen them yet I implore you to b4 its too late. seein the three of them back on stage has a slightly surreal feel to it cos….well cos I never thought they would do it again. the sound seems even more powerful than it ever was and boy can these middle aged punkas punk. rats not cal but then he shouldn't be should he – hes rat singin songs that mean a hell of a lot to him and everything to me

the new stuff rocks too…go see em cos this is one reformation that works so much better than I ever thought it would. buy the new cd ep check em on myspace love em b4 they leave us again….never again decontrol realities of war protest and survive....you know it makes sense....

pure pop…..i had read a little about the sleepys and was certainly intrigued by them an their charismatic frontman luke steele…however on the tuesday lunchtime before the gig i heard god lead your soul for the first time from their latest album personality one was a spider one was a bird and fell in love with life once again – I am so easy ya know!

checking their website they were touring and playing manchester that very thursday. i am trying to be a lot more spontaneous this year as part of my "back 2 basics in 2006/07" approach to life and so a quick chekette with ticketline and yes tickets were still available one was booked immediately an 2b collected on the night so roll on thursday….

…peter the taxi driver was picking me up @ eleven after the gig so all I had ta do was get drunk on cheap university shorts (2.50 for double an mixer yum yum!!) get rite down at the front an prepare to be amazed, amused, aroused or bored…….

….on they came and started with a barrage of white noise….oh dear….minutes later though they broke into god lead your soul and the world stopped spinning as the whole crowd were captured and taken somewhere very very special…luke has a reputation as being difficult…bollox cos tonight he was jolly jokey and so inviting…his voice is very haunting and his songs are so this year but in a strange way they are so familiar too the place was packed out and it got kinda weirda when he did gnarls barkleys crazy but ya know it sounded like his own. this was a super set the best songs from his two albums and i am really pleased i saw him at the smallest academy (3) cos that's the best….

another great discovery for me in 2006…so glad I went cos it did me a lot of good i left the academy elated very very drunk inspired and in love with life once again...more importantly it gave me a lot of good confidence glass filling vibes that im still feeling today….check him out…he's on myspace….how was i supposed to know....god lead your soul...you needed more....i understand what you want but i just dont agree....ps i also had the best kebab in manchester afterwards courtesy of abduls kebab house of pleasure....yum yum yum!

David Ruffin’s extraordinary, unreleased third solo album, finally unleashed from deep in the Motown vault. Included on this exclusive limited edition are the original 12 tracks scheduled for release as Motown 733, plus seven amazing bonus tracks from the album sessions, and the mono single mixes of the four songs issued as singles in 1971.

It’s the great David Ruffin in his prime, with Motown’s Funk Brothers band in full flower and the company’s producers and arrangers on their game – left behind, until now.

It’s late 1969. David Ruffin is having a good year, following a bad one. His album and single, “My Whole World Ended,” are smash hits, with a second album, appropriately titled Feeling Good, hitting stores. The slender “Ruff” seems to have overcome the nastiness of the year before, when he’d had a volatile split with the Temptations, for whom he’d sung memorable leads on timeless songs like “My Girl” and “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg.”

Ruffin, 28 years old, begins work on a third album, with Motown producers Clay McMurray, Johnny Bristol, Henry Cosby, Ivy Jo Hunter, Smokey Robinson and Duke Browner lining up with hot tracks: originals like “Each Day Is A Lifetime,” the proposed album’s first single; the dramatic “I Can’t Be Hurt Anymore”; the upbeat “Anything That You Ask For”; the mournful “Let Somebody Love Me”; the intensely exciting “It’s Gonna Take A Whole Lot Of Doing”; and stunning covers of recent hits, “I Want You Back,” “Rainy Night In Georgia” and, with a swaying choir, “Heaven Help Us All.”

Ruffin is simultaneously recording duet tracks with his brother, Jimmy, for the eventual 1970 LP release, I Am My Brother’s Keeper. Jimmy’s solo album, Groove Governor, is released in the fall of 1970. Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin’s high tenor counterpart in the Temptations, is planning to leave the group, just as their hit, “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me,” featuring his near-perfect lead, hits #1. Eddie’s solo album All By Myself, and the Temptations’ Sky’s The Limit, are released April 1971. David’s album David is scheduled for release a few months later. “Don’t Stop Lovin’ Me,” Browner’s B-side to Cosby’s “Each Day Is A Lifetime,” hits the lower rung of the Pop charts. You Can Come Right Back To Me” b/w “Dinah,” both Smokey co-productions, are issued as a second single.
In a move that ranks high among the many Motown mysteries, the album is never released. The performances, many of them new compositions, are never heard again, not even as filler for future albums. David Ruffin’s next solo album is released in 1973, meaning he had four years between official LP releases.

But the tapes survived. The stories remain fresh. The sound of David Ruffin at the height of his powers can now be heard, 33 years later. The packaging faithfully reproduces artwork of the era, including rare photographs, an essay detailing the sessions and the moment, and full track annotations.

Allison Lickley is a singer/songwriter that charms audiences with her stories and captures them with her songs. Known for her honest, intimate performances, her voice is often compared to those of Joni Mitchell and Norah Jones. Wolf/Furey Productions writes that Allison is a “…painter of musical vistas both tender and sweeping, with a voice as clear and rich as a star-swept Canadian winter sky.”

Born in Edmonton, raised in Sudbury, schooled in the Maritimes, and currently living in Montreal, this Canadian singer/songwriter has come a long way since writing her first song in the back of her parents Volvo wagon. The daughter of two scientist/musician parents, it seemed almost logical that Lickley would first earn a degree in Chemistry before moving to Montreal to officially start her music career.

And now, two years after moving to Montreal, Lickley has released her first full-length, fully-produced record, You Might Find Me Here. This twelve-song album is the culmination of a year’s work with LA/Montreal producer/engineer, Robert-Eric Gaskell. You Might Find Me Here is a fusion of Lickley’s minimalist folk style and Gaskell’s urban music background. The album has already started garnering attention from the critics; of You Might Find Me Here, CBC’s Dan Lessard writes that “Allison Lickley has a haunting quality to her voice and lyrics that compel you to play every track on her disc. This up and coming young lady has soul, track to track, and by listening to her music, you get the sense you know her.” Lickley describes it as a record that stays true to her folk songwriter’s heart, but has taken risks and stretched her creative limits: “I feel that this record parallels my move to Montreal – a beautifully unpredictable, electric city. The album maintains the essence of the songs, but it goes in directions you might not expect… it isn’t afraid of adventure.”

Like her new record, Lickley is not afraid of the adventure that awaits her. With several Central and Eastern Canadian tours under her belt, frequent radio play on Campus stations and CBC Radio One, appearances on numerous compilation albums, and two previously released EPs, Lickley has only just begun. The next year for this ambitious 24-year-old will be a busy one as she promotes her new album with tours across Canada, Bhutan, Europe, and the United States.
